New cameras from Leica and Sony worth considering

Today was a big camera announcing day.

First Leica introduced the Q, which looks very exciting: 24mp sensor, 28mm fixed lens with both real manual focus and auto focus.  After testing the Sony A7 mk 2, and being disappointed, I went back and have been using my Leica MP quite a bit.  I really appreciate its clean lines and no nonsense controls.  The digital Leicas have tried to follow this same path, with mixed results.  This, the Q, appears to be Leica’s best effort yet! I will be following this camera carefully but am also thinking an interchangeable lens version will be released within months.

Later in the day Sony announces two cameras, the A7r mk2 with a new 40mp internally stabilized cmos sensor, with 4k internal video, better controls, like a locking mode knob, and what promises to  be a much better shutter design, including electronic shutter option.  I will be looking at this camera very carefully.   I tested out the Mk 2 version of the A7 and just couldn’t get into it.  I found it surprisingly heavy for its size (the A7r mk2 is even heavier)  and I still can’t get exciting about looking at a little TV screen for picture taking.  I was also turned off by its hobbled together look.  While the concept is good I find their designs lacking; it would never be a camera I would reach for for pure pleasure.   I also worry about Sony’s lack of customer service at the sale.  I have a RX1, which is a great little camera but there have been no firmware updates and when the external evf failed there was no way to have it repaired.

The other camera release today is the RX100 mk4.  I own the mk1 and like it, but use it very little.  This mk 4 seems to be pretty neat, with a 20mp stacked cmos sensor with high speed, and 4k video options.
